Cookie Policy

Cookies are small text files containing a certain amount of information exchanged between a website and the user's terminal (usually the browser). They are primarily used to make websites function more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the website owners. Cookies can be either session or persistent. Session cookies remain stored on the terminal for a short period of time and are deleted as soon as the user closes the browser. Their use is strictly limited to transmitting session identifiers (consisting of random numbers generated by the server) necessary to enable safe and efficient browsing of the website. Persistent cookies, on the other hand, remain stored on the user's terminal until a predetermined expiration date. Since these cookies are not deleted immediately upon closing the browser, they allow the website to remember the user's choices on the site, collect information about the pages visited by the user, how often the site is visited, and identify user navigation patterns, in order to improve the experience on this site. Session or persistent cookies can be either first-party or third-party, depending on whether the entity installing the cookies on the user's terminal is the operator of the site the user is visiting (first-party cookies) or a different entity (third-party cookies).

Types of Cookies

  • Technical cookies. Technical cookies are those used for the sole purpose of "carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide such service" (see Art. 122, paragraph 1, GDPR). They are not used for any other purposes and are typically installed directly by the website owner or operator. They can be divided into navigation or session cookies, which ensure normal navigation and use of the website; analytics cookies, assimilated to technical cookies when used directly by the website operator to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site; and functionality cookies, which allow the user to navigate based on a set of selected criteria in order to improve the service provided. The installation of these cookies does not require the prior consent of users, while the obligation to provide information pursuant to Art. 13 GDPR, which the site manager, if he uses only such devices, may provide in the manner he deems most appropriate.

  • Profiling cookies. Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user while browsing online. Given the potential invasiveness of these cookies on users' privacy, European and Italian legislation requires users to be adequately informed about their use and to express their valid consent. Article 122 of the GDPR refers to them, stating that "the storage of information in the terminal equipment of a contractor or user, or access to information already stored, is permitted only on condition that the contractor or user has given his or her consent after being informed using the simplified procedures referred to in Article 13, paragraph 3" (Article 122, paragraph 1, GDPR).
